Joining one of London Stock Exchange’s markets can be one of the most important days of a company's journey. To mark the event, companies and issuers are invited to 'Open or Close the Market' each day at 08:00 and 16:30 at London Stock Exchange Group's headquarters in Paternoster Square.
Historically, a bell marked the beginning of the trading day on London Stock Exchange's trading floor. In 1986, the deregulation of the market and dissolution of the trading floor saw an end to this long-standing tradition. However, in 2011, London Stock Exchange launched a new installation to revive this celebrated ceremony. In October 2019, the Market Close ceremony was introduced marking the end of the day’s trading. Since then, new companies, issuers and member firms have joined charities and leading public figures in participating in this unique event, marking the start and end of trading on the world's most international market.
The installation is one of the largest of its type in the world. Over 500 high-definition LED screens, a giant central illuminated cube and a bespoke ‘Market Ceremony’ mechanism make up the three-story installation, where market movement and prices are displayed throughout the day using real-time data.
Companies are hosted by a senior representative of London Stock Exchange Group and invite their guests to join them for a reception after the Ceremony. Leading company representatives will receive a unique memento of the day – an engraved glass tablet which is used to launch the Market Ceremony itself.
Company ’Welcome stories’ are posted on our website and in social media to celebrate the day.
Extra public coverage from the ceremony. This is a write-up of your Market Ceremony. This is then uploaded to www.londonstockexchange.com along with a few photos from the morning. It is then promoted via our Twitter and LinkedIn social media channels.
